In the news: February 2020

Throughout each month I am posting links to media coverage where I have had active involvement in the story or have provided comment and a Labour Party perspective. As an elected County councillor I am often asked to provide local input on national stories and the socialist perspective on local issues.

East Kent Hospitals chief should consider her position

Maternity health news clippings

After the harrowing tales of avoidable baby deaths at maternity units in East Kent, including Margate, I could see major failings in the hospitals trust management. The apparent inability to acknowledge a problem and act accordingly and the insensitive nature of the CEO’s statements have driven myself and others to question her suitability for the role.

Amongst the many outlets covering this story have been The Isle of Thanet News and Kent Online.

Additionally, The BBC’s Mark Norman approached me for comment whilst investigating the story. His journalism brought the maternity failings to light.

Cross party objection to Government’s Thanet schools plan

Isle of Thanet news clipping

Councillors at Kent County Council have reacted with surprise at Lord Agnew’s decision to impose a new secondary school on an area that would prefer investment in existing sites. I find the rationale hard to understand. The Government suggests building a new secondary school in Margate is a better alternative to expanding our current schools because those current schools are under performing.

In this Isle of Thanet News piece I voice my disapproval of this ‘feast or famine’ approach to our local education provision.
